Abstract
Cachirulo is a small rural village founded at the end of the 19th century in the department of Toay (province of La Pampa, Argentina), currently inhabited by fifteen families in conditions of structural poverty. The objective of this article is to address the social construction of such space and the trajectories of its inhabitants, in order to reconstruct the dissimilar social reproduction strategies that make persistence possible in such rural village. The social, qualitative research carried out is framed within the interpretive paradigm, and it combines different primary and secondary sources obtained for the years 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2018 with the use of census data, interviews with key informers, photographs, cadastral information, and previous reports. It was possible to identify in Cachirulo a combination of flexible mobility practices that articulate the urban and the rural; diversification, with high degrees of informality; strong social bonds; the use of the region’s natural resources; and the capitalization of public revenues as elements to guarantee the persistence and expansion of the location. The study case analyzed illustrates the combination of flexible socio-productive and mobility practices that make possible the development of social reproduction strategies.
